Last day of our extended recession was like this: going to the shopping mal and movie theater! So typical of me, isn’t it? However, i must tell you that I’m not following the new releases so I was not pretty sure on which movie I would watch.

When I got there, I was divided between The Boss Baby and The Shack. Well, I was not in the mood for an animation and I was also in the company of my aunt and uncle, who wished to watch The Sack. I followed them: the chosen movie was The Shack. I have never read the book so I had no idea about the story, but this: it is somehow religious.

I can say I really liked the movie. Let’s see why. The happy family The tragedy takes place when Mack is saving his two kids from drowning in the lake and when he comes back he can’t find his little girl, the youngest daughter. Moments later he and the cops find out she was murdered by an old hunted killer who was in the police target for months. The murder did his action into a shack where he left the girl’s clothes and blood. Do you remember the letter at the beginning of the movie?

Well, it is written on it to find “Daddy” in the shack, that shack. “It’s been a while”, says the letter. It is possible to accept Mack’s reaction to that, right? He thinks someone is playing or joking on him. But there were no footstep on the snow so who could have done it? After talking to his best friend, he decides to go to the shack and figure out what the hell is going on.

When Mack gets there he finds the shack empty and covered by snow. He decides to go back home but he listens to someone coming and the decides to hide himself.

The man that is coming sees Mack and act nturaly as if he expected to find him on there. Mack doesn’t understand anything but decides to follow that mysterious man. For his surprise, when they got to the shack, the place was colorful and bright, like in a beautiful and warm summer day. And more: there are other two people inside the shack. Who are they?

They are the God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It seems to be weird and totally nonsense, right? Well, it is, somehow, but that is the greatest idea of the movie – and book. Would you like to know what happens later? So, do watch the movie!

I can ensure you it is good one! MY OPINION I am not a big fan of religious book so I have never read the book The Shack. When I went to watch the movie I was with my uncle and aunt who are religious people and, well, the other options were not so good to watch. Although I do not like at all, I have no prejudice. Also, I have heard that the story itself is about faith, the relation a man has with God, not exactly about religion. In the end, it was not wrong and I left the cinema filled with passion and able to see the world with other eyes.

God, in the movie, affirms: I did not create the religions. All I want the most is to have my kids living a life of piece and joy. Until the end of the movie we figure out that what really matters is to believe there is someone (or something) above us who will always be there for us in every moment of our life. In a way to contrast it, the author uses a family which goes to a Pentecostal church.

Why not make use of any other religion, instead of the most common (maybe?) in the United States? Anyway By talking about the moment in our life, Mack, the father who has lost his daughter, do represent all of us in that character, I mean, we can see ourself in the movie when the character is talking to God and Jesus. We feel and share the same feelings and questions. Every question he ask to the divine man is like he is reading our mind – mine, at least – and the answer he gets from them is like a shock to us – me, at least. This character is deeply representative. In some moments I was spotting myself on the characters shoes. Imagine yourself face to face with God for a weekend.

You can ask and talk about everything you always wanted. You can talk abou the suffering of losing someone you loved or ask why you were left alone when you needed Him the most. What would you ask? How would you react? I would do exactly the same as Mack did.

There are many asnwers from God and it is up to us to interpretate it and consider its relevance to our life. But, there is something God said and it made me think for a while: I did not do that with your daughter. Saddly, there is the evil in the world and I can not do anything to avoid its action.

The only thing I ask in favor is to spread love and peace to everyone in each part of the world while the evil is there. There will not have time to it if we fill the world with love. Sure, it was not with these very single words, but the idea is the same.

We are the only one able to vanish the evil from the earth surface. In an other shot, and I consider this one as the one that hit the people’s heart and feelings, we find Mack talking with Wisdon, in a cave. Wisdon is a woman who makes Mack judge the killer for doing what he did to his daughter. Mack wanted to see him suffering in hell. He wanted God to punish him for what he has done.

Wisdon then interrupt him and change the subject. Now Mack has to decide who he would send to hell: his son for telling him lies and acting against his father’s will or his daughter, who avoids him and does not talk to him because she is feeling guilty her daughter’s death. Let’s have a talk with Wisdon Mack gets crazy because he can not take this decision. They are his kids! He loves all of then. Although they have such bad behavior, they are still his son and daughter and deserve second chances and all the love.

After that, Mack – and us – realizes how God feels before situations like this. “That is how God feels”, says Wisdon.

It is impossible not to feel sorry for have we have already said before in our life after watching this scene. Yes, you should admit it.

There are many other scenes which I consider interesting and funny. One of them is when we have Mack in a boat and Jesus on his side.

Mack is almost drowning so he takes Jesus’ hand and walks on the water. It is like “you can do everything when you have Jesus with you”. But what I found amazing was the idea of chosing a black woman to play God, an Israeli man to play Jesus and a Korean woman to play the Holy Spirit. It is a mix of genres and ethnicities! It sort of break down the idea we have about them because we – most of us – picture God as an old man with a big white beard and Jesus as a thirty-years-old man with long hair.

In the end, we imagine them the way we want, right? We must accept the differences. As I stated in the beginning, I do not like religious movies at all. The Shack, however, has it in a different way, in a different perspective. After watching it we are able to see the world with other eyes and we also change our thoughts about many things. It really is a great movie and I do not regret of watching it.
